This 1-1/2 inch square frame or 38mm square frame comes from the book Gardens and Gardening 1940 edited by F.A. Mercer and C.G. Holme, which was the ninth edition of G&G put out in England during the Second Great War, they debated the print but G&G went on.

I very much like the drama of this capture, with the approaching storm on the left and Palazzo Falier sunlit on the right.

Palazzo Falier is a gothic building dating from the beginning of the 15th century. The canal side has not changed in 400 years, with the two unique “liagò”, covered loggias on two sides of the building leading onto the Grand Canal, separating a central facade with gothic windows in the middle, making room for a small garden in between.

The palace belonged for several centuries to the Falier, an old patrician family that was present in the area of Venice since the 9th century. The Falier were sailors, “Capitani da mar”. They also had two doges in their line, Doge Vitale Falier (1084-1096), who is very much honored to this day…but also Doge Marino Falier, who was executed for treason in 1355 and his portrait has a black canvas covering his face in the Doge’s Palace, even to this day! I suppose one out of two is not bad….

The Grand Canal is the lungs, major artery and highway of Venice. The banks are lined with more than 170 buildings, most of which date from the 13th to the 18th century, and display up front the art and architecture created by the Republic of Venice thoughout its history.

Palazzo Cavalli-Franchetti is a palace adjacent to the Ponte dell'Accademia, one of only four bridges that spans the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. The palace was erected in 1565, and went though a series of renovations throughout the mid-19th Century. Since 1999 it has been the seat of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti (Venetian Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts). It frequently houses cultural events.

This photo was taken at almost the same time as this capture of the Grand Canal seen here.

I traced this colouring page from a sketch book. I think the original artist of this vintage image is the same as the one who did these:

Have fun colouring it!

This will be my official "before picture". A huge 40 story hotel/Condo project is being built on this lot on Boul Rene-Levesque. It will be one of the city's premiere towers once built. Looks great in the renderings.. a Marriott Courtyard Hotel and more condos... the city seems to be in a condo boom these days.
